THE SIMPLE LIFE

Don't you think the world went and got way too complicated? Just think about it.

Five or more days of the week we all have to work at a job that we may not particularly enjoy. We have to pay taxes, save for retirement, and abide by countless laws. Because of the way humanity has been structuring the world, we need to do this for our survival. The complication of the world has affected the things we most value, our freedom and overall happiness in life.

Everyday new fashion and technological advancements are introduced to us. They are then integrated into our lives and presented to us in a way that boosts our desire for them. Many people feel that as long as we are moving forward in technology it is a good thing, however, few ever question the necessity of these things in our lives.

If we have been living without many of these things for such a long time, why do we suddenly must have the latest item on the market?

Stuck in a state of materialism and consumerism, many people don't realize their desire for these things have been limiting their freedom. It takes money to obtain all the material things that we want, and so we have to give up much of our free time by working for someone to earn it.

The sad part about all of this is that we often spend most of our time trying to obtain and maintain these material things than we actually do enjoying them. We unconsciously become slaves to the very material objects we are striving to acquire. This leads to all sorts of unhappiness and stress that can shorten lives.

But what is the root cause of the materialism, consumerism and parasitism that is complicating our world? I believe it is the great desire for money and the practice of extreme capitalism. While money serves as a means of exchange, the increased want for it is what leads to the various methods humans have created for obtaining it.

This results to capitalizing on everything imaginable, including people's lives. These two elements have even complicated simple aspects of our lives such as love relationships. Nowadays you can't have romance without finance.

Now because our world has been complicated in so many ways, it is very difficult for a person to separate him or herself from it all if he or she wishes to do so. There are several basic physiological and safety needs that must be satisfied by having a home, food on your plate, and clothes on your back.

Due to the use of money and practice of capitalism these things are not easy to obtain and we are forced to participate in a system that has diminished our quality of life on several different planes. If humanity did not complicate the world so much, we would be able to live simpler lives filled with a greater level of happiness than we presently experience.

Time Is Priceless

Show of hands; which would you rather save – time
or money?

The majority of people in society at large will choose money.
But the truth is; how you spend your time is far more important than how you spend your money.
Lost money can be regained, but time, once it’s lost – it’s gone forever.
Money mistakes can be corrected; but time mistakes – apart from the grace of God – are made forever.
If you have a lot of money, but you have only two weeks to live, you are not a rich man.
But if you have time and no money, you can use your time to get money.
In fact, you can convert your time into just about anything you want.
God doesn’t really give us money – He gives us time and we convert it into money.
God doesn’t really give us friends – He gives us time and we convert it into friends.
God doesn’t really give us knowledge – He gives us time and we convert it into knowledge

What am I trying to say?

Your time is your most valuable resource; therefore you must guard it jealously
You must be wise and deliberate about how you use it
Look at Ephesians 5:15-17 again
15 Look carefully then how you walk! Watch your step. Use your head. Don’t live like ignorant people, but like wise people. Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people),
16 Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!

17 Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish , don’t lie carelessly, unthinkingly. Make sure you understand what the Master wants understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is.
Remember, every minute you live is an irreplaceable resource that is limited in supply.
Every minute you live is a gift from God; and you have the responsibility to maximise it.
Remember that life is short – no one has the luxury of living forever in this mortal state.
We are mortal and our life will eventually end.
And the more we appreciate the value of time, the wiser we become at using it.
If you want to know the value of . . .
One year . . . ask the student who failed the final exam
One month . . . ask the mother of a premature baby
One week . . . ask the editor of a weekly newspaper
One day . . . ask the daily wage earner who has six children
One hour . . . ask lovers who are waiting to meet
One minute . . . ask the passenger who missed the flight
One second . . . ask the person who survived the accident
One millisecond . . . ask the Olympic silver medallist

YOUR TIME IS PRECIOUS; YOUR TIME IS PRICELESS

Poet Carl Sandburg said; “Time is the most valuable coin in your life. You and you alone will determine how that coin will be spent. Be careful you do not let other people spend it for you”.
Now, because your time is precious; and it is limited in supply, you have to be very selective what you put in it.
And that brings me to the big issue of priorities.

PRIORITIES

Priority simply means determining what comes before what.
From the word ‘prior’ which means ‘before’.
It means in the use of my time, one comes before two and two comes before three . . . and so on.
It means, my daily activities are on a queue – I attend to the most important thing first; and then the next most important thing – and so on.
It means everything is not equally important to me.
Not everything requires equal time attention and energy.
You can’t give the same amount of time, attention or energy to everything or everyone.
Some things require five minutes – don’t give those things one hour.
Some things require one hour – don’t give those things five minutes.
Same with people.

How do you know which things or people require five minutes versus one hour?

Priorities
The things that are most important should never be at the mercy of the things that are least important.
So, because you cannot do everything, be everywhere or please everybody; you have to choose.
Chinese author, Lin Yutang said; “Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of the non-essentials.
Philosopher William James said; “The art of being wise is knowing what to overlook”.
How do you decide what to overlook?
Priorities

ESTABLISH YOUR PRIORITIES

Your priorities help you to determine how to spend your time
And the converse is true – the way you spend your time is a good indicator of your priorities
Have you ever found yourself thinking; “I need more time”?
Well, newsflash – you’re not going to get it!
No one gets more time
There are 24 hours in the day – that is 1,440 minutes – and everybody gets the same
The president doesn’t get more, the school janitor doesn’t get less.
So, what determines the value of our lives is the value of what we put into our time.
Since you cannot change time; you must change what you put in it.
If you want to change your life, you need to change your priorities.
If this year is going to be different from last year, then your priorities this year must be different from your priorities last year.

ESTABLISH YOUR PRIORITIES

And if you don’t establish your priorities, someone else will.
If you don’t decide how your day will be spent, someone else will.
Have you noticed that people who have nothing to do usually want to so it with you?
What are the benefits of establishing your priorities?
1. Priorities help you separate what is most important from what is least important.
2. Priorities liberate you from the tyranny of the urgent
Just because something is urgent doesn’t mean it is important
The simple question is: “What is the worst that will happen if I don’t attend to this thing?”
3. Priorities release you from the guilt of not doing everything
4. Priorities help you eliminate distractions
My Psychology professor used to say: “If you have two conflicting duties, one of them is not your duty”
And we added: “It is your pleasure”
5. Priorities help you obtain the highest return on the investment of your time
Any time you see people fulfil their dreams; any time you see people attain the highest level in their career, you can be sure that priorities have been very important to them

ESTABLISH YOUR PRIORITIES

Let me close by giving you a five step strategy for establishing your priorities

STEP 1: ARTICULATE THE GOALS

Three categories – yearly, weekly, daily
In order to do this, you need to create three lists
1. Write down the five most important things you want to achieve this year
It doesn’t have to be a permanent list - you can review it as the year unfolds, but start with a list
If you don’t have this first list, you have given your year the permission to unfold in a random fashion
My list for this year is to:
Practise the presence of God
Pursue wisdom
Promote my health
Produce extra wealth
Preach for transformation
2. Write down the five most important things you need to achieve this week
Now you may have more than five, but work from a list of five – the most important
Write down the five most important things you have to achieve today

STEP 2: ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

These answers will help you to determine what must be on your list and what number to assign to them
What are the four R’s
Reach, Required, Returns, Reward
1. Where do I want to reach?
This is the goal question
This year, this week, this day
2. What is required of me?
This is the duty question
This year, this week, today
What is required of me - as a spouse, as a parent, as an employee, as a team leader?
Remember, if you have two conflicting duties, one of them is not your duty
3. What will give me the greatest return?
This is the efficiency question
Very quickly you will find that some activities give you a greater return on the investment of your time and effort
Concentrate on those
This is also a way to determine your strengths
4. What will give me the greatest reward?
This is the fulfilment question
Reward of fulfilment, finances and favour

STEP 3: ASSIGN THE NUMBERS

Take a close look at your list of five and assign a priority number to each one
Which one must come first, second, third, fourth and fifth

STEP 4: ALLOCATE THE TIME

For example, for your yearly list, how many hours per week should you give to each item?
Same for your weekly and daily lists
But beyond allocating a timeframe for these, now allocate a specific time e.g. 8.00 to 9.00 p.m.

STEP 5: ADVANCE THE PROCESS

Take the first item on your daily list and start to work on it – and stay with it until it is completed
Then take the second item, then the third until all five are done
What if you only managed to finish item one?
No problem.

Then tomorrow, item two becomes your item one
Will this always happen the neat way you arranged it?
No – there will be interruptions and eventualities
But you will still achieve far more than if you did not establish your priorities
If you want to increase your focus this year, if you want to increase your productivity, if you want to become more effective, ESTABLISH YOUR PRIORITIES.

Things We Can't Control

The idea of trusting the universe is a popular one these days, but many of us don’t know what this really means and we often have a hard time doing it. This is partly because the story of humankind is most often presented as a story about struggle, control, and survival, instead of one of trust and collaboration with the universe. Yet, in truth, we need to adhere to both ideas in this life.

On the one hand, there is much to be said about exerting control over our environment. We created shelter to protect ourselves from the elements. We hunted for animals and invented agriculture to feed ourselves. We built social infrastructures to protect ourselves and create community. This is how we survive and grow as a civilization. However, it is also clear that there are plenty of things that we cannot control, no matter how hard we try, and we often receive support from an unseen force – a universe that provides us with what we cannot provide for ourselves.

It is a good idea to take responsibility for the things in life that we can control or create. We work so we can feed, clothe, and shelter our loved ones and ourselves. We manifest our dreams and visions in physical form with hard work and forethought. But at a certain point, when have done all that we can, we must let go and allow the universe to take over. This requires trust.

It requires a trust that runs deeper than just expecting things to turn out the way we want them to. Sometimes they will, and sometimes they won’t. We develop equanimity and grace as we learn to trust that, with the guiding hand of the universe, life will unfold exactly the way it should. We are engaged in an ongoing relationship with a universe that responds to our thoughts and actions.

Honesty & Integrity

I want to talk for a minute; to be open with you. Something that is very important to me is integrity and honesty. I always strive to be as honest and open about myself as I can. Perhaps this is a throw-back to my Christian background and Jesus’ harsh stance against hypocrisy: the last thing I ever want is to be a hypocrite.

Anyone who has followed my blogs for a while has hopefully learned that each and every blog of mine is honest. It is a record of my honest opinions/thoughts/beliefs at the time of writing. I have never deleted a controversial blog, because I want to show that I have the integrity to stand by what I’ve written, and own any wrong calls I’ve made. I also don’t make a habit of deleting comments because I think that it also shows integrity that I allow opposing opinions to be there for all to see.

I’ve made a commitment to you and myself to try and write more positive and uplifting blogs. And I do want to do that, but I don’t want anyone thinking that I am always happy or that I put on a mask for the sake of proving a point. I’m sharing this with you because I want to continue to write whatever is on my mind and that includes when I am in a bad mood. I want you to know that I still stand by my commitment to spread positive ideas, but in order to show my integrity I feel it’s necessary for me to also show that I am human.

Plus, the greatest purpose my blogs serve is ultimately for my enjoyment. They are my therapy, my way of processing my thoughts and my way of providing further meaning to my life by spreading ideas I think will help make the world a better place. And I have learned so, so very much from the people who comment on my blogs. Thank you.

I don't care how beautiful she is on the outside, enduring five minutes of a haughty, arrogant, cursing prima donna is enough to make any fairy tale princess uglier than the proverbial frog that she kissed in the first place!

I have no hope for the human race. Intellectualism is dying. Nobody thinks anymore, they just merely cry with outrage at anything that makes their lives even remotely uncomfortable. Pleasure, that’s all this generation cares about. Whatever can make their lives easier. They don’t pay attention to the issues of the world, just what’s going to make them the happiest.

It’s clear they gave no effort at all into the thought of the greatest literary genius of all time. One of them even spelt Shakespeare and person wrong. Then refused to correct it when they were told the right way to spell it.

Ok, this blog took a lot of time and effort, thanks to all of you who helped with your input and thoughts:

What makes a good friend to me??

This was a hard question for me to answer and I want to pose this question to all of you at the end here....

In my eyes a real friend is tried and true. They are there when you need someone to talk to and they understand your feelings or at the very least act understanding even when they don't understand fully. They sympathize with you and they always take your feelings into consideration. They understand that things in your life need to be accomplished as well as they would take care of their own things. They don't get angry or mad if you have something important that needs to be done before all else. They will not talk about you in public and they will always have your back.

A good friend will offer you advice and stand by your side even if they do not agree with the decisions you may make. A good friend will offer encouragement and offer prayers or good thoughts/words to help you through a situation.

A good friend will call you when they know you are having a bad day to make sure you are ok, to do the best they can to offer a shoulder or an ear. A good friend will not only think of themselves, but always take care of themselves...you can't be a good friend to someone, that offers good advice, if you aren't all together yourself...

A good friend will laugh at you AND with you, they will tell you when you mess up or they may keep their thoughts to themselves, but either way, they'll love you regardless of your failures or decisions. They'll question your thoughts, beliefs or feelings, to make sure you think from all angles, not just to be an ass. They may say something you don't like to hear or don't want to hear, but they do it in YOUR best interests.

A true friend will never be offended by another friend’s advice or questions…maybe if there was an offense taken it was only because it was the truth and it made them mad to hear it said aloud, maybe it only reconfirmed their fears. True friends don’t say those things out of spite, but out of looking after the ones they care about and protecting the ones they love.

Real friends don’t publicly fault their friends. They are grown up and can act mature enough to handle things like an adult. A real friend doesn’t stab you in the back when you are only trying to be helpful. A real friend won’t ignore you over something trivial and insignificant.

A real friend will understand your need to take care of the things in your life above all else. If they are a real friend they won’t fault you for taking a few minutes to get something important taken care of. They will understand and still be there once you have taken care of necessary business.

A real friend will sense when there is something wrong in your attitude or personality, they will call you up to see if you are ok, they will send you a message saying that “I’ll be there for you, when you want to talk.”

A real friend will not do something to help you out, then turn around and use it against you. Especially when the action that supposedly helped you was not one that you had even asked them for.

They let you have space, but don’t let you go too far from their sight. They keep you in mind and always have your best interests at heart. They understand that your family will always come before them and are not selfish in their desire to take up all of your time and energy. They appreciate the efforts you make at friendship, even if you are not able to lend out hours of your time at the time they need you.

There are exceptions to this of course. If a friend is in a car wreck or tragically ill and on their deathbed, then yes, a real friend will put their life on hold to help the other one make it through and cope. They will drop it all and give everything they have towards making the friend's situation more comfortable or tolerable. However, if it is the same situation over and over again, for example an asshole significant other or a drug problem, then the friend in need should understand that the things in your life will take importance over their matters at hand. It doesn’t mean you don’t care, it just means you have to take care of something, you WILL get back to their problems as soon as you can, but experiencing the same problem over and over because you don’t want to change things only means one thing…insanity.

(a short story)

Interesting how excited she became when I asked if she would like to go for a walk. A simple pleasure I thought would be nice for us to partake in. We set forth into the night air which was clear, crisp, and cool. Bright stars looked down upon us while a mild wind brushed over our faces, infusing our minds with the pure joy and satisfaction of togetherness. The smiles on our faces brightened the dark sky much more than the moon ever could as we shared short kisses filled with affirmations.

We talked about how our pasts shaped us in to the persons we are today. About the hopes for how our present day activities will shape our future. We shared our beliefs, our perspectives on several things and with each step, each word, each moment of silence we became closer, actually becoming a part of each others own body. Walking yet finding calm within the ruckus of life that we were surrounded by. I could feel the emanation of her love as we held hands. This love I felt, this love she wanted me to realize that she held for me, was far beyond anything she had ever spoke of.

It's been so long since I've heard your voice. It was reckless of me letting you slip away from me. I want you to know what has happened all this time, but as of right now im so terrified to hear from you again mainly cause i dont know what your gonna say since i've been gone for so long.

I tried to live my life but everyday seemed like it was getting harder to breathe. Those three words above have so much power, so much meaning in my opinion. My belief is that everyone is beautiful. We all have that picture of the perfect body image in our heads. But the truth is, you will never become that person that is inside your mind. THAT is a perfect person, and NO ONE is perfect. Most of society has been conditioned to think 'beautiful' as a pretty skinny girl , an athletic guy with muscles, designer clothing, pretty much within the norm of society. I find that to be really sad.

I know it's not easy to think you're beautiful. It takes time, but ANYONE can change their thoughts. PLEASE don't make yourself throw up anymore. You ARE skinny enough, you ARE beautiful. Please don't change yourself to fit in with the 'norm' because you ARE unique, which is BEAUTIFUL. Beauty is what the heart is. If you have a heart full of love than you're beautiful, If not than you need some love.

When you wake up tomorrow, when you're at the toilet throwing up because you don't feel skinny, when you are cutting yourself to take away that emotional pain, when the memories of rape haunt you, look into the mirror and say "I AM BEAUTIFUL." If you'd like to protect your personal assets, appear more legitimate to publishers, and establish an employment history for things like obtaining credit, then you should definitely look into incorporating or establishing a DBA.

1.Choices, Choices. Although it might sound complicated, your first step is to choose what kind of business front you want to frame your writing in. Operating without any kind of paperwork at all means that you are doing business as a sole proprietor--a very popular choice among many freelance writers. However, you might want to look into forming an LLC or LLP, which are both simple and somewhat inexpensive (only $50 around my area!), but offer more protection to you. Last, you could go even bigger by choosing a different kind of corporation.

Recommendation: An LLC will serve most writers' purposes.

2.All that paperwork! Don't be intimidated by the type and amount of paperwork it takes to set up your business. States are beginning to support and encourage small businesses by streamlining this process. For example, my LLC was only 2 pieces of paper and $50. Are you making this harder than it needs to be? You'll never know unless you do the research!

3.Feds! Yes, you now have to deal with the Federal government, but it's easier than you might imagine. You need an EIN for your small business. This is simply a number that's similar to your S.S. number, but you can give it clients in place of your S.S. It's simply the tax ID of your business, and it takes two minutes to obtain one at the IRS website. You just answer a few quick questions, and then they send you a letter in the mail. How official are you, now?

4.Do the research. This may be an extraneous step-- unless you find something. Your job now is to research your city, county and state regulations to make sure there are no licenses or permits you need to do your job. As a writer, it's a long shot, especially at the state level, where you've (supposedly) already made yourself know through your LLC paperwork (above). However, I have known writers that needed to tell their city about their home office, and obtain an inexpensive permit. Better safe than sorry!

5.Bank on it. With your LLC (or similar) paperwork in hand, it's time to make it official with your bank. Establishing a separate bank account for your company is crucial for future credit purposes. A business bank account in the name of your writing company is your next step, and should take only about 30 minutes of your time.

6.Keep records. You now need to manage your writing dollars. Whether you choose a simple Excel spreadsheet, or an entire software accounting system doesn't matter. What matters is that you keep your 'money in' and 'money out well-accounted for.

7.Pay Uncle Sam. Ahh, yes, every business needs to share the fruits of its labor with the government. Here's how to make sure you , and at the right times. (Hint, there's four of them-- not just one!)

8.Consider insurance. Do you have clients coming to your home office? You may need liability or "slip and fall" insurance. Have you ever considered the need for errors and omissions insurance? These are things to consider, now that you're official and all!

Tips:

Again, don't be intimidated by any of these steps. I've known many writers who want to form an LLC, but are unsure of the process. I personally found it to be much simpler than I imagined, and hope you will, too!

Your ex still on your mind?

Are you still in love?Should you tell them?Did they move on?

These are some of the main questions after a break-up that Ive had to ask myself a lot. Im sure a lot of you out there have the same questions that you wish someone could just answer for you,but as we all know it doesn't work like that....sucks I know! When you split up with someone you have been in a long lasting relationship with, it can be very difficult to stop some of the feelings that you have for him or her still. Sometimes even though you know that the split is for the best, your mind might still continue to wonder and think about your ex. There is no easy or magic formula for getting him or her out of your mind. However, there are a few steps listed next that may or may not help.

1.Think Back!!!

-Think of all of the things that made you split. When your mind goes down memory lane...make sure that it also travels the rocky and bumpy road that caused the break up. Then remember all of the reasons that made you decide to part ways to begin with. Another thing put away things that remind you of him or her. Things he or she gave you (especially pictures of them or the both of you).

2.Your freeeee!!! Like free Willy!!!! :)

-Enjoy your newly found "freedom". There are many previously forbidden things that you can do now that he/she won't be around to tell you not to do them. Indulge in as much football watching, beer drinking and pool playing that your heart desires, because you are now free to do them without repercussions and girls do as much flirting, partying, hanging out with who ever, and so much more as well.

3. Stay Away!!!!!

(I mean it)-Find different places to hang out. Try to stay away from places that you went together, bcuz if you...you'll be sitting there like "DAMN!" Any mutual friends should also be off limits just for now though. (Not a permanent thing) You should still go out with your friends and have fun!!! Even if you may not think that you feel up to going out, seriously go ahead and make your absolute "best" effort to have a good time. Listen to me! I'm not lying!

4. Get yourself together!!!

-Repair your damaged ego. Your ego may have just taken a heavy blow if you were not the one that wanted the break up. Start slowly in getting yourself back into dating shape again by doing some fun activities like taking dance lessons or get a membership at the gym. This will let you get back into physical shape, build your ego and you could possibly meet new people in the process.

5. PEACEEEEE!!!

-Think about the positive things to come. If your ex did things or had faults that made life difficult for you, just imaging the positive things that will be in your life without the mental stress that he/she had once created for you. Once you can get out of the limbo state of wanting him or her back, you can finally get some closure and peace of mind to move on in peace.

Calling your partner constantly after the break up.
Saying “I Love you” over and over and how much you can’t live without them.
Trying to convince them that you’ll change and everything will be different this time.
Begging and crying, acting out of desperation in the hopes that they will feel “sorry” for you and take you back.

Trying to use reason and logic to get them to come back.

Resorting to arguing, blaming and guilt trips when all else hasn’t worked.
Doing absolutely nothing because you’re afraid to make things worse!
If your doing any of those things make sure you are to try and stop yourself. Your not helping the situation at hand any easier on yourself...you know the saying if you set it free and it comes back, it was always yours and if it doesn't it just wasn't meant to be. Its pretty much like that. Which isn't always such a "BAD" thing! And that's something that some ppl need to realize.Okay, now this part is for those out there that are searching for guidance when it comes to confronting their ex about their feelings. If your ex happens to already be moved on and in a new healthy happy relationship...plz do not tell him/her. The reason I say this is bcuz you might ruin something he/she is sharing with someone. Telling him or her you love them will be selfish and could cause problems between you too. Rly think about some things:"Do you think you would feel the same about him/her if she didn't have a new significant other?"Maybe, just maybe you really do still love him/her...but maybe you are just in love with the "idea" of her.Don't sit there and tell your ex you still love them or that you want them back if they already have a strong,happy,healthy relationship...that could start problems between the both of you or between ur ex's previous relationship! "Why would you want to come between that?"............................................................................................

If you rly love your ex, you will be strong enough to let him/her be with the person that makes them happy. You will sit there and just be happy that they found happiness! :)Here's another situtation: Ex is single still!I feel that if your ex is still single and isn't kind of seeing someone already, then you should go straight ahead and tell them how you feel. I believe in fighting for what you love. I mean thats what I did. Im not gunna sit here and lie to you saying I won him back, bcuz I didn't...don't get me wrong I fought long and hard. I put up a pretty good fight if you ask me, but not everything can go back to the way it was.

And that's when we need to face the facts that its over. I did and now look at me...im still HAPPY! I mean me and my ex still to this day talk and have a very healthy relationship. We still are in love, but we don't let that interfere with our lives and friendship. We just came to terms that we were better off friends. When we are children, we are surrounded by many things that shape our thoughts, actions, and desires in the future. As we grow into teenagers these things we learned as children begin to take root, and we learn whether or not the behaviors we've learned are acceptable for us or not. Sometimes it's very difficult for us to unlearn things that we've been taught, or things we've told ourselves from a very young age.

Our parents are very influential in this process. The kind of relationship that our parents have with each other has been proven to directly influence the type of partner we seek out as adults. If our father is respectful and courteous to women, males are in turn usually respectful and courteous to women. If our mothers nag, berate, and pester our fathers into submission, females in turn usually do the same thing.

As children we are faced with relationships of all kinds. Usually these relationships are male female, but that doesn't matter for my purposes today. What I want to talk about is the preconditioning we all receive is children that says the purpose of human kind is to grow up and raise a family.

From a very young age we are shown that success is measured in what we achieve. The idea of a "perfect life" is having a spouse, two kids, a dog, and a house with a white picket fence. We all have our idea of what the "perfect' life would be, no matter what the details, more often than not that ideal includes falling in love and having a life long partner.

The trouble with this idea is that it rarely happens that way. We know this though, we all know the divorce rate, we all have habitually single friends, yet we still seek out this ideal. There are a few black sheep in our society that have learned that it's okay to be single, that life happiness is not dependent upon meeting somebody else.

The real trouble with this whole philosophy is that it makes us feel worthless. Just the thought of having an "other half" by nature means that until you find this other half, you are by all accounts unfulfilled. In order to be a whole you must first find that one special person who completes you.
This is absolutely crippling! No wonder single people have such low self esteem! How can they feel good about themselves when they are not whole people? There are people out there who must be in a relationship at all costs. Their lives can be going just fine, they have a job, a car, enough money, but they have no relationship and so their life's is crap.

Some of us out there food ourselves into happiness. We'll meet somebody that in our hearts we know is not right for us, and we manufacture feelings for this person. Even though this person might treat us poorly, ignore us, demean us, the idea of having a lover that treats us poorly is better than the idea of not having a lover at all. Because when that person is absent we can imagine that our relationship is great. When they are gone, we are able to think of "all the good times" that may or may not exist, but they are enough to keep it together. "Love" or the absence of it, can be truly blinding.

When do we wake up? When do we see that the pursuit of happiness does not have to include finding our soul mate? The answer is simple, when we acknowledge ourselves as being whole. When we feel whole in and of ourselves, finding a lover is no longer a need, but a want.
It took me a very long time to learn this lesson. Some of my friends are still figuring it out. To those people who still feel like they NEED a lover to be happy, I say wake up. Look around you at all of the wonderful things in your life. They are there whether you see them or not. Look at all of the people who love you, not for anything in return but just because.

I do believe that people can find a steady, stable, healthy relationship. You wont find it by holding on to every person you go out with until they cast you aside. You have to set boundaries for yourself. You have to have self worth. I went out on dates with, and had relationships with over 100 men in the course of 8 years before I met my "other half". You will never meet Mr. right, if you are too busy with Mr. Right now.

Girl Talk: What If You DO Need A Man?

“Some women are just happier in a relationship.”

As my shrink said this, my jaw dropped to the floor. Did she really just say that? The woman who had feminist literature on her bookshelf and never failed to induce a pep rally of self-empowerment at the end of each session?

We were, of course, discussing (OK fine, I was complaining) about my lack of a boyfriend, and inability to get over some of the ones I did have. For me, I surmised from my psychotherapy high horse, the issue was about loneliness and, therefore, about some childhood father complex. I thought I sounded smart; it seemed like something my psychiatrist would say herself.

But her response was both jarring and a relief. Some women are just happier in a relationship. Huh? Isn’t the modern woman supposed to be totally amazing on her own? But at the same time, the tension in my heart unclenched as I considered the phrase that potentially answered all of my romantic issues.

Was I one of those women? And do they really exist? Looking back, I began to think it might be true. When in committed relationships, I was happier. When single, I was depressed. Perhaps this was chance, but I realized that I took better care of my life with a boyfriend by my side. I kept things cleaner to show respect for his presence in my living space. I bathed more often and took care of my acne-prone skin.

I dug up a paper I wrote during my senior year of college when I was living with the man I planned (at the time) to marry. Based on Daniel Miller’s A Theory of Shopping, I had explored the author’s hypothesis that purchasing could be motivated by love, and proved it by shamelessly charting a week’s worth of my purchases. At the time, the list was comedic (I had a friendship with my very giving professor). But now looking at my list, I see a zeal and motivation I don’t always find in my life now. In buying skim milk, bran cereal, flax bread, I was taking pride in eating healthy. With the new dishes and wine glasses, I added sophistication to our home. I recalled feeling satisfied and grown up when we began enjoying food on matching plates and not drinking Pinot Grigio out of mugs.

When I recently asked my friends about this idea of “being better with a man” or “needing a man,” a good handful of them confirmed this belief. (Definitely not all, mind you.) One said, “I’m more organized, in control, and positive when I’m receiving male attention ... a relationship is enough to keep me motivated and excited.” Another friend, Olivia, told me, “In a relationship, I have someone else to answer to. There is another person who is close enough to me to know when I’m being lazy or not living up to my potential, so that pushes me to actually be more active.”

For Olivia and me, efforts of self-sufficiency outside of relationships can sometimes fall short, or more often, turn into faking that whole “I’m an awesome single woman” thing. And I’m sorry, I do know that I’m awesome, but getting there is exhausting. I’m not saying this is everyone, but that perhaps there are women—and men!—who need sex with trust, or who rely on spouses for friendship rather than large social networks. And perhaps “needing a man” is an indication of the more basic human instinct—not for reproduction, but for companionship.

The idea still doesn’t sit right with me as someone who has put so much energy into making me happy. But, then again, there’s a lot to say for someone who chooses to be happy. Even if it means the choice includes a man.

"PROMISES"

Promises are easily made. Keeping them often proves more difficult because when we are pressured to strive always for perfection, we find it simpler to agree to undertake impossible tasks than to say no.

Likewise, there is an infinite array of circumstances that conspire to goad us into telling falsehoods, even when we hold a great reverence for truth. When you endeavor to consistently keep your word, however, you protect your reputation and promote yourself as someone who can be trusted to be unfailingly truthful.

Though your honesty may not always endear you to others—for there will always be those who fear the truth—you can nonetheless be certain that your integrity is never tarnished by the patina of deceit. Since frankness and sincerity form the basis of all life-enriching relationships, your word is one of your most precious and powerful possessions.

When we promise more than we can deliver, hide from the consequences of our actions through falsehoods, or deny our true selves to others, we hurt those who were counting on us by proving that their faith was wrongly given. We are also hurt by the lies we tell and the promises we break. Integrity is the foundation of civilization, allowing people to live, work, and play side by side without fear or apprehension.

As you cultivate honesty within yourself, you will find that your honor and reliability put people at ease. Others will feel comfortable seeking out your friendship and collaborating with you on projects of great importance, certain that their positive expectations will be met. If you do catch yourself in a lie, ask yourself what you wanted to hide and why you felt you couldn’t be truthful.

And if life’s surprises prevent you from keeping your word, simply admit your error apologetically and make amends quickly. Since the path of truth frequently represents the more difficult journey, embarking upon it builds character.

You can harness the power of your word when you do your best to live a life of honesty and understand what motivates dishonesty. In keeping your agreements and embodying sincerity, you prove that you are worthy of trust and perceive values as something to be incorporated into your daily existence.

Laugh. Smile. Be Grateful.

Start a Gratitude Journal.

Step 1
Find a notebook. You can buy an inexpensive notebook and decorate it if you want to. Make it be a notebook that makes you feel happy just to look at. Always keep a pen or pencil with it.

Step 2
Make mental notes of good things that happen all day.

Step 3
Every night write down at least five good things that you are grateful for that day. It can be something as small as the smell of a flower, or as big as someone special saying they love you.

Step 4
Try to look for lessons in your challenges. Even they can become blessings, too.

Step 5
Re-read your journal and allow yourself to feel the positive energy in your life.

Step 6
You can include goals in your journal, with steps you are taking to achieve your goals. Include pictures to help you visualize your goals and achievements.

Step 7
Share your blessings with people close to you, if you feel comfortable. Especially if it's someone that you count as one of your blessings. I'd give anything to tell my Grandma Mary what a blessing she was in my life. Say it now to your loved ones, before it's too late.
