How to improve our chances of contentment and how to deal with disappointment when, inevitably, we have to face it.

First and foremost, it’s important to realize that, whilst our disappointments often come from outside sources, the reason that we experience them is because of internal beliefs and expectations.

We are disappointed when the company refuses to offer us that job we wanted and hoped for so much.

We are disappointed when friends, lovers, family let us down and fail to treat us in a fashion we had believed they should.

We are disappointed when something does not work out the way we had hoped.

Yet we cannot go through life without expectations. And we cannot protect ourselves by holding negative expectations. Hope is a fighter…no matter how much we try to squash it down, it pops back up again…often in the sneakiest fashion.

So….perhaps we simply have to be brave enough to hope, honest enough to assess our expectations realistically, and courageous enough to accept that sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we are going to be hurt by disappointment. Maybe we have to make the choice to risk ourselves, and accept that, sometimes, we will get let down…..

So on a day that is ruled by the 5 of cups, don’t go looking for disappointment….rather, spend some time assessing your expectations. Look for imbalance, or lack of realism, in your expectations of people and situations. If you find any, then be true to yourself, and adjust those expectations till they serve you better.

Look for negative expectations (nothing good ever happens to me; I am always going to be lonely/miserable/unhappy; I am too weak/inadequate/uninformed to achieve what I need) and tackle these with gusto….they create darkness in your life, and serve no earthly purpose. Drive them out of your head with determined use of the affirmation, and agree to go after them every single time they surface.

And finally….expect a nice surprise in every single day you live. Expect to find something that fills your heart with joy and gratitude every single day. Go looking for these things….make it part of your daily routine to discover something which makes joy arise within you…….

why is this happening to me?

I know how it feels when you find everything around you collapsing. Your friends, your loved ones, your money, your self confidence and even your dreams. If someone told you that personal development can prevent you from facing life shocks and downturns then he is lying to you. In this life we are living, we all have to go through up times and down times, we all have to pass through difficult times and good times.

While no one can control the future or the unexpected life events still we can all control our response to these undesired events. After all its our response to such events that differentiates between someone who is feeling good and someone who is feeling bad and not the amount of problems they are facing.

What to do when you can't take it anymore?

The first thing you must do is recall your life purpose or even find one if you don't have. After all we do all have life purposes but some of us may have not discovered it yet. Try to recall the reasons you are living for and the goals you are after, recalling those reasons will help you tolerate the bad situation you are in because you will start to perceive the suffering as a price for your bigger goals and life purpose.

Patience

Patience is not doing nothing but its the act of not allowing your emotions to intensify until things start to improve. During the time you are being patient you should be doing your best to fix what you can fix of your problems, don't sleep or do nothing then say that you are patient.

Our emotions intensify as result of not controlling it the moment we started feeling bad. If you managed not to let your emotions intensify in the first few moments you faced a problem then you will have more control on them and your problems wont make you feel that bad.

Time is running

Time is running whether we liked this fact or not or whether we were feeling good as it passes or not. If time is going to pass anyways then why let it pass while feeling down or broken? if we are going to live anyways then let us live a better life by refusing to give in to bad moods and unwanted emotions.

While in the middle of the dark it becomes very hard to see hope but it may be somewhere near us. Grab a candle and search for hope here or there by being a positive thinker, by knowing that most of your bad emotions are due to fear of the future and not because of current events and by asking God for help.

I am sure you have faced hundreds of problems before that seemed to have no solution yet something unexpected happened and the problem was solved. Positive thinking is not being unrealistic but its rather looking for the realistic opportunities that can help you deal with your problem rather than letting fears and unrealistic emotions cloud your vision.

If you can't take it anymore, then light a candle, and look for hope because it might be so near.

Our quality of life is a very important factor in having a long and good life, and while many of us have had to get some notches in the self-esteem, and although it has happened already in childhood, it is possible to patch the holes and give itself a new beginning and a good life.

What people can you forgive? When will you do it? What prevents you may. in doing so?
The best thing you can do is to forgive and put the bad experience behind you, and you do simply by taking responsibility for your own life and move forward, there's only one person that is responsible for how your life lived, and that is you. We human beings are born with a great responsibility. We have only an attempt to have a good life. There is no right or replay, it is here and now, the case, so you might as well learn to love it "as is" and not hang down in the past. You can not change it.

That may well sounds strange to say that we should forgive a man who may have done something that really is quite unforgivable, but to forgive does not mean that we accept what has happened and done. That to forgive is about to let go of the negative emotions that are connected to a particular situation or person, so they will not swallow up more of your energy.

You do not have to say to the person, you will excuse that you do, for it is just something that you do inside yourself. forgiving is only for your own sake, and it will give you strength and joy and make you feel that it is you who has control over you and your life when you have done. You will be free and you are happy, and ultimately perhaps not as a sour, old man/women. What properties of others can get your mind to the boil? Have you even these properties? Why not accept these properties of yourself?

NADI JYOTISHYAM

Nadi (pronounced 'naadi') Jyotishyam, is a unique way of unravelling a person's past, present and future. Popular in Tamil Nadu, this is a system where any person who gives his or her thumb impression, can know details of previous birth(s), sins, virtues, the rationale behind one's present birth, one's future in this birth and also details of future birth(s).


It is claimed that sage Agastya had the knowledge and vision of the reasons for the birth of each human being. He wrote this down on palm leaves called Yedugal, meaning books, in Tamil. During the reign of King Sarabhoji of Tanjavur (circa 18th century A.D.), these were rewritten and referred to as Volai Chchuvadugal, meaning leaf prints. These prints form the keys to the thumbprints in the prediction process.

Today a few families, from places like Chidambaram and Kancheepuram, in Tamil Nadu, have inherited these palm leaf prints, for generations and are involved in predictions for seekers, both within the country and from abroad.

D. Balasubramaniam, 39, of Sri Agathiyar Nadi Jothida Nilayam, from Kancheepuram, is one such Nadi Astrologer. Chennaibest.com spoke to him in this exclusive interview:
Why is this process of Prediction called "Nadi"?

Normally, any astrologer can go to any place, refer to a palm or a horoscope and predict. However, our system involves referring to the ancient palm leaf scriptures, which are in one place and cannot be moved frequently. Hence the person, who wants to know of his or her birth details, has to come to our place and "seek" these details from us. In Tamil the word "nadi" means seeking, among other things.

What is the system of your prediction?

Any person, who seeks this information, has to come to us on any day, except Tuesdays, before 8.00 am, and give us his or her thumbprint. Right thumbprint for men and left thumbprint for women. Based on their thumbprints, we search and refer to the correct collection of palm leaves that belong to that particular person's details.

There is a palm leaf print for every type of thumbprint. As per our system, the thumbprints of human beings are classified into 108 major varieties. Among these 108 varieties, there always are differences. So, we study the prints carefully and pick the concerned palm leaf print/s. Then we check with the concerned person, on parameters like their names, their parents' names, their place of birth etc., which are indicated either directly or indirectly in the palm leaves. If all the parameters are met with and accepted by the person seeking, as correct, we shall proceed with the predictions.

In what language do you predict?

I read from the scriptures, which are in ancient Tamil and not comprehensible by many, today. Hence we also give definitions for certain words and try to explain in understandable Tamil. Today, we are also able to help people with predictions in English, Hindi and a few South Indian Languages.

How about predictions to foreigners?

They may be from different places, religions and of different languages. We have received seekers from many foreign countries. But, today, most of our foreign clients are from Japan. They always bring their own interpreters and we never found it difficult to predict to them. Even if they are from different places and belong to different religions, there are indications in the palm leaves and while checking for the parameters, we found that they do match.

How long does this procedure take?

It takes about 4 hours to search for the correct palm leaf print. Then depending on the person's request for information, it may take another few hours, to predict and explain. If it is in Tamil, we may process in about 4-5 hours. For other languages, it takes more time.

What is the accuracy of your predictions?
99% accurate, as claimed by my clients.
How long have you been practising this?

To my knowledge, our family has been into predicting from the palm-leaf scriptures for about three generations. I had been initiated into studying the palm leaf prints in my teenage. It took me about four years to understand and decipher the ancient script (which is very miniscule and looks like flowing scrawl). It took me a further six years to understand the content of the scriptures, to enable me venture into predictions.

Have you learnt this on your own or did you learn it under anybody's tutelage?
I have learnt the art from my father's younger brother Sri V. S. Arul Siva Arumugam, who became my guru.

Are you training anybody now?

Yes.
Normally this art is found in and around Chidambaram.
How come in Kancheepuram?

I hail from a small village called Valathan Pattinam, near Mayuram of erstwhile Tanjavur and today's Nagai Qaid-e-Millat district of Tamil Nadu

However, I had a foreboding that I will be comfortable in a place, which is an abode of Goddess Amman. Since Kancheepuram is the abode of the Goddess Kamakshi, I came here in the year 1987 and have settled here.

The way clients, from far and wide, throng Sri Agathiyar Nadi Jothida Nilayam, it appears that Balasubramaniam's prediction, for himself, has indeed come true.

There are so many questions that we ordinarily ask ourselves. We deal with different experiences everyday, meet different types of people with different backgrounds. Sometimes, we play as preys for predators. Some people prey on those who are innocent of something they are not even aware of. But why do these things happen?

I believe it happens for a reason. And that reason may be known or unknown to the prey. But in our search for the truth, we must be ready to face the challenges or trials that will come ahead.

Some people kept on running away from their problems and lack the courage to face and deal with those by doing something that will neutralize the situation. Instead, they rely on their feelings of revenge and even plan to victimize some innocents around them. Is this considered fair? It is quite obvious that it isn't but the innocent need to undergo this situation in order to learn from another experience and learn a valuable lesson in his/her development. We do not only gain suffering from our experiences but also virtues that we should have applied from the start. It makes us stronger and better persons. Some people do have insecurities and tend to do more bad things because of their frustrations. Some people already think that it's normal to blame people for their sufferings but I guess they have made it worse if they were not able to resolve it by applying good things. If somebody did something bad, the victims should not return the favor and instead do something good to make the predators realize their mistakes. And for that, all innocents should be ready for any repercussions.

Some people long for something that they have not achieved and thus became their frustrations. Aren't these frustrations just part of ordinary life? I think frustrations are normal and should not be hindrances to achieving people's ultimate goal, to be happy. Happiness comes with so many sacrifices but those are needed to make it happen.

In life, there should be no tries, it should either be do's or dont's. We should be capable of forgiving and learn how to let go. Holding on to something that we know we can't have will not make us happy. It is just making a fool out of ourselves. We should not make fictions but face reality. Let go of the past and be concerned about the future. If you already did a mistake in the past which resulted to losing a friend, then don't make that mistake again as it should have taught you a valuable lesson. Friends should be cherished and treated sensitively. Friends are not just substitutes for things or experiences that we lack. Friends are important people in our lives but we should not try to dictate our ideas or feelings to them. The main lesson here is acceptance and understanding but abuse should not be tolerated.
